(заглавие русского перевода романа Теккерея "Vanity Fair" - 1848 г.; выражение заимствовано автором из книги Дж. Беньяна "Путешествие пилигрима" - 1684 г.) Jahrmarkt der Eitelkeit (Titel eines Romans von Thackeray; der Ausdruck wurde von dem Verfasser aus John Bunyans Buch "Die Pilgerschaft" entlehnt). Mit diesen auch im Text des Romans oft vorkommenden und kommentierten Worten übt der Satiriker Kritik an Egoismus, Geldstreben und Machtgier der herrschenden Klassen Englands und an ihrer geistigen Hohlheit. Die Ausdrücke Я́рмарка тщесла́вия und База́р жите́йской суеты́ ( Titel der ersten russischen Übersetzung des Romans) werden zur bildlichen Bezeichnung dieser Begriffe zitiert.
